Rembrandt lighting
Used in studio portrait photography. This lighting set up is achieved by one light and a reflector. This lighting style is characterised by an illuminated triangle under the eye of the subject on the less illuminated side of the face.

Split Lighting
A single light placed at 90 degrees of the subject and placed a bit higher than eye level. This leaves one half of the face in shadow.

Butterfly Lighting
Light is placed central to the subject and above eye level.

Many artists use studio lighting to create a natural or dramatic look to their photos. Rembrandt and Split lighting create dramatic effects but Butterfly Lighting creates a more natural looking image.
